An effective way to handle your emotional stress is to increase the tone of your parasympathetic nervous system, which will decrease the levels of adrenaline in your blood stream. End result – you’ll feel more relaxed.
Here are some suggestions on what you can do to increase the tone of your parasympathetic nervous system:
There are many deep breathing techniques, so find the one that feels most natural for you. The important thing is that your breathing should make your body feel relaxed.
Spend some quiet time each day in meditation, prayer or purposeful relaxation
For some people, relaxation sessions are enhanced by music designed to facilitate relaxation, such as listening to the sounds of nature. For others, the sound of silence is best.
Take the nutrients you need for a healthy nervous system
As author Wayne Dyer says; “You see it when you believe it.” Spend time each day visualizing yourself going about your day feeling relaxed and emotionally well.
Be honest with your feelings
As Socrates says, “Know thyself.” Recognizing what you’re truly feeling is an essential part of preventing unpleasant emotions from becoming chronic.
Regular journaling can be extremely beneficial to your emotional health. In my practice, I recommend that my patients keep a diary. The rules are simple: No censorship – just a pure flow of thoughts from your mind and heart onto a piece of paper.
Regular exercise is one of the best ways to avoid depression and stay emotionally balanced. The type of exercise you do is not as important as doing it regularly – at least three times a week.
The exercise I suggest to my patients is walking. Walking is a weight bearing exercise (good for bone health) that you can do at the speed that your body allows, while still using all the muscles in your body. Walking outdoors in nature; listening to birds chirping and trees swaying in the breeze, you just can’t help but relax.
What we think and believe has a profound influence on our health. Positive thinking (people are inherently good, the odds are stacked in my favor, the solution is waiting for me to find it) will help decrease your chronic pain. Thinking negatively (people are inherently bad, the odds are stacked against me, I’ll never find a solution) will undoubtedly increase your chronic pain.
Handling your emotional stress really does lesson your chronic pain. The more you use the above suggestions, the better you will feel. You may even find that you now have the strength you need to find the way to eliminate your chronic physical pain once and for all. I think that you will find that solution in the pages of this site.
