Are there exercises that permanently eliminate chronic back pain? Dr. Mercola, author of one of my favorite natural healthcare websites, apparently thinks there are. I know that (if you were born with an abnormal foot structure) there are none.
I admire and greatly appreciate Dr. Mercola’s common sense, non drug, non invasive approach to taking care of our bodies. But when it comes to chronic muscle and joint pain, even Dr. Mercola is clueless about the common cause, hence doesn’t understand that exercise is not the answer.
In his article, Appropriate Exercise May Be Essential For Treatment Of Back Pain Dr. Mercola starts by stating that many of the doctor visits and billions of dollars spent annually to treat back pain are unnecessary and/or ineffective and often prolong or worsen the problem.
He continues, saying that back pain is increasingly being treated with addictive drugs and diagnostic exams that expose patients to potentially unnecessary and dangerous levels of radiations. And that these treatments do not cure back pain, but only treat your symptoms. ‘Right on’, Dr. Mercola – we both agree that treating symptoms doesn’t work.
He then states that back pain is usually the result of simple biomechanical problems relating to poor posture, inflexibility, or improper movement and that back pain may originate from tension and imbalance at a completely different place than where the pain is felt. For example, an imbalance among the anterior and posterior chains of muscles can lead to pain and that by rebalancing and strengthening these muscles, one can remedy low back pain.
Dr. Mercola feels that these biomechanical problems can be prevented and managed by exercises that strengthen your back and abdominal muscles and maintain proper function of your joints. He firmly believes that posture-correcting exercises are a critical component when it comes to treating back pain.
Dr. Mercola then suggests specific exercise and movement programs – Foundation Training, Gokhale Method and 3-Dimensional Dynamic Movement Techniques – as well as chiropractic or osteopathic care.
How Effective Are Exercise Programs For Chronic Back Pain?
We all know that exercise is vital to maintain health and fitness. But here, we are not talking about the many reasons that exercise is essential to maintaining overall body fitness. What we are talking about is – what do we do to permanently eliminate chronic pain (back pain or pain in any other weight bearing joints)?
This is where Dr. Mercola’s conclusion falls short. The reason being is that he doesn’t know that if you were born with a Rothbarts Foot or PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity (two common foot structures that cause chronic pain) no amount or type of exercise will permanently correct your poor posture nor permanently eliminate your chronic pain.
It is true that certain exercises can manage your chronic back pain to a greater or lesser extent, but here we are talking only about pain management. Dr. Mercola – You need to go a step further. You need to suggest a therapy that effectively treats these abnormal foot structures which, in turn, allows the body to automatically correct its poor posture, inflexibility and improper movement. Rothbart Proprioceptive Therapy is that therapy.
In conclusion, there are no exercises that permanently eliminate chronic back pain when it is caused by the Rothbarts Foot or PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity. So if you are exercising with competent trainers and not getting the results you had hoped for, it probably means that it’s time to look at your feet for the answer.
