What can happen when insole manufacturers make unrealistic claims, and give little-to-no education – or even gross misinformation – to healthcare providers who are dispensing insoles to their patients? The answer is that their patients end up using the wrong insoles and can suffer because of it.
The following illustrations show what can, and often does, happen when you use the wrong insoles:
Increased Forward Postural Lean
Before: Forward Postural Lean
After: Increased Forward Postural Lean using Incorrect Insoles
A forward postural lean is one of the characteristics of having an abnormal foot structure, and is an indication that you have bad posture throughout your entire body.
When you use the wrong insoles, your forward postural lean may increase; which means that your posture has become worse.
When your posture becomes worse, this means that the misalignment in your joints has increased and your postural muscles (which were already overly contracted or stretched) have become even more contracted or stretched. This causes greater pain, which can range from mild aching to severe and debilitating – to the point of greatly limiting or preventing your ability to walk, or even having to use a wheel chair.
Other issues can include; balance problems, issues with your bite, such as overbite, or problems with your jaw (i.e. clenching and tightness, grinding your teeth and/or pain in your temporal mandibular joints)
Before: Protruded Stomach
After: Increased Stomach Protrusion using Incorrect Insoles
A rotated (usually forward) pelvis is one of the characteristics of having an abnormal foot structure. This forward rotation results in weakened abdominal muscles and a protruding stomach.
When you use the wrong insoles, they can worsen the forward rotation of your pelvis and so your stomach muscles become even weaker.
A forwardly rotated pelvis frequently destabilizes the base of your spine, which can result in abnormal spinal curves (scoliosis and kyphosis). A forwardly rotated pelvis also creates functional leg length differences (which can compromise your ability to walk in a straight line), low and mid back pain, sciatica, stomach symptoms mimicking Crohn’s Disease, bladder dysfunction (urinary frequency and/or incontinence) and kidney pain. If you are a woman, the forward rotation of your pelvis can also create abnormal and painful menstruation and/or difficulty in getting pregnant.
The more forwardly rotated your pelvis is, the worse your symptoms will be. Hence another reason why you should never use the wrong insoles.
Before: Forward Head Position
After: Increased Forward Head Position using Incorrect Insoles
A forward head position is one of the characteristics of having an abnormal foot structure. When you use the wrong insoles, your head can be forced further forward.
The further forward your head is, the more the small muscles in your neck (occipital muscles) become stretched.
This can produce symptoms such as neck pain, severe headaches, a constriction of your esophagus (making swallowing more difficult) and/or a persistent sensation that something is caught in your throat.
A forward head position can compress the blood flow from the trunk of your body to your head, resulting in cerebral hypoxia (reduced supply of oxygen to the brain). The symptoms of cerebral hypoxia are; brain fog, memory loss, fainting, diminished vision or hearing and personality changes such as depression or anger for no apparent reason. Cerebral hypoxia can lead to central nervous system dysfunction.
The more forward your head is, the worse your symptoms may be. Hence a good reason why you shouldn’t use the wrong insoles.
Here’s a summary of why you should never use the wrong insoles:
Brain fog, headaches, memory loss, fainting, diminished vision or hearing, personality changes, balance problems, functional leg length difference, sciatica, stomach problems, kidney pain, incontinence, urinary frequency, conception problems, abnormal or painful menstruation, balance problems, issues with your bite, issues with your jaw and greater muscle and joint pain.
Using The Correct Insoles For Your Foot Structure
People use insoles because they have chronic pain – sometimes just in their feet, but often in other parts of their body as well. Chronic pain often is the result of having poor posture. Poor posture often results from having an inherited, abnormal foot structure – either the Rothbarts Foot or PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity.
If you have a Rothbarts Foot – and especially if you have a PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity (the more severe abnormal foot structure) – it is crucial that you treat it correctly. A vital part of doing so is using the correct insole, as only the correct insole will optimize your posture and permanently get rid of your chronic pain.
This insole must be custom designed and fabricated, which can only be done after running specific analyses on your posture. In order for this to happen, your doctor must be fully trained by me, the discoverer of the Rothbarts Foot and PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity and developer of Rothbart Proprioceptive Therapy.
