There’s a great article in Alternet, entitled “The Shoe ‘Science’ Racket: Footwear Companies Rake in Monster Cash by Lying to Their Customers.”
The subtitle reads,“Pseudoscientific jargon has helped fuel billions in profits in the shoe business” and then the article gives examples on how shoe manufacturers play on your emotions to increase their profits: Improve your athletic performance, jump higher, run faster or just be able to walk around town. Some of these claims are valid, but most are just “bunk”.
This article is a good read for everyone, but especially relevant for those who look to specific shoe styles as a way to improve their health and/or lessen their aches and pains. And if you suffer with chronic pain, you must be especially careful in selecting shoes. This is why:
If you have one of these common foot structures, your feet will twist as you stand or walk, resulting in bad posture. Bad posture causes your muscles to overly contract or stretch and your joints to become inflamed. When not effectively treated, this problem becomes chronic.
The only way to relieve this chronic pain is to effectively treat your abnormal foot structure. Shoes –no matter what the manufacturers claim – will not handle your problem.
To add injury to insult, some shoes are notorious for causing health problems and as a result, millions have been paid due to fraudulent advertising claims. If you have a Rothbarts Foot or PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity, the chances of injury (because your feet twist) are even greater.
The fact is that, if you suffered with chronic muscle and joint pain before buying your Shape Ups, FitFlops, Earth Shoes, Easy Tones or Vibrams, chances are extremely high that you will continue to suffer with chronic muscle and joint pain after you’ve laid down your cash.
Good Footwear Doesn’t Cost A Lot Of Money And Doesn’t Damage Your Health
Simple guidelines for buying shoes that will not damage your health:
- Select shoes that are shaped for your foot – of adequate length, width, and depth. Shoes should not compress your toes or mid-foot. Check that the ball of your foot rests in the widest part of the shoe.
- The uppers should be soft leather that breathes (allows air to circulate inside the shoes).
- The toe box shoe should be rounded or square, not pointed.
- The outer sole material must be hard, resisting compression and/or deformation, but they must be able to bend when you walk.
- The shape of the sole must be as straight as possible (i.e., not curved).
- The heel height should not exceed 1 inch (2.54 centimeters).

In closing, don’t listen to advertising claims. Good footwear is uncomplicated, has no frills and usually don’t cost a lot of money. If you use my guide above, this is the best you can do. But ultimately, no shoes (no matter how good they are) will end your chronic pain and restore your body to health. The only real solution is to effectively treat your abnormal foot structure.
