Profile Of A Typical Candidate For Therapy
Chondroitin Sulfate (also known as Calcium Chondroitin Sulfate, Chondroitin Polysulfate and Glucosamine) is being relentlessly promoted to chronic pain sufferers by massage therapists, chiropractors, magazines, tv ads and infomercials, as an effective way to reduce or eliminate joint pain.
Literature reports that it can be used to treat osteoarthritis because it increases lubrication of the joints, maintains cartilage elasticity, stimulates cartilage repair and reduces joint pain.
Because of these rave reviews many of my patients have asked me if they should use this seemly innocuous supplement/drug – is it really as good as ‘everyone’ says?
At first, Chondroitin Sulfate may seem like the answer to your prayers and can, indeed, be well-tolerated for up to three years of use. But for many people there can be side effects including nausea, diarrhea, gastro-intestinal pain, breathing difficulty and elevated blood pressure.
As a surgeon, I’ve had the opportunity to observe first hand, the effect that Chondroitin Sulfate has on the joints, and it’s much more insidious than the side effects listed above.
As a podiatric surgeon, while reconstructing arthritic joints, I frequently found hard, irregular shaped ‘clumps’of Chondroitin Sulfate floating in the joint spaces and/or adhering to the joint surfaces of my patients who had taken this drug/supplement. These clumps, once coated on the joint surface, are almost impossible to remove and can cause locking of the joint and/or restriction of its motion, making joint replacement a necessity.
A good analogy is adding an incompatible additive to the motor oil of your car, which causes a gumming of the internal mechanics of the motor. As a result of this gooey sludge, you have to rebuild the motor.
Because of my personal experiences finding Chondroitin Sulfate deposits within the joints of my patients, my opinions are very different from the rave reviews commonly purported by the media and other practitioners who advocate its use. I strongly recommend not using Chondroitin Sulfate for chronic pain relief. Even though you may feel better initially, the long term results of using it can be disastrous.
Update – June 20, 2011
Dr. Mercola, on his blog post entitled, Forget Glucosamine and Chondroitin, states that research has shown that glucosamine and chondroitin are not effective in reducing symptoms associated with arthritis.
I agree with Dr. Mercola. In fact, two of the largest and best studies, funded by the National Institute of Health, have come to the same conclusion (Clegg DO, et al; Sawizke AD et al)
