Millions of people worldwide are suffering with chronic muscle and joint pain, and a mountain of drugs, natural remedies, holistic treatments and conventional therapies have sprung up to treat it. Hence, the words ‘pain management’ are everywhere.
It seems like practically everyone is in some stage of managing their chronic pain, from Ibuprofin to invasive joint surgery. But exactly what is pain management?
If you are reading this article, you don’t need a definition of the word ‘pain’, as you have been experiencing it in all its grandeur. Here are definitions of the word, ‘management’:
- To continue to get along, to carry on
- To progress or perform adequately, especially in difficult circumstances
- To exert control over
- To make submissive to one’s authority, discipline or persuasion
Interesting – Nowhere in these definitions is the word – ‘Eliminate’. That is – management does not mean ‘elimination’.
So, when we are speaking of pain management, we are not talking about eliminating pain. We are not talking about getting rid of it forever. We are not saying hasta luego, adios or arrivederci to 20 (put in your own number) years of debilitating muscle and joint misery.
What actually is being done in pain management; is the act of getting some measure of control over chronic pain. Lessening or dulling a problem that will – if left unchecked – continue for the rest of your life.
Why Is Chronic Muscle And Joint Pain Merely Being Managed?
The answer to this question is quite simple. Chronic pain is being managed because both traditional and alternative medicine has not found what is causing it. Sure, they state reasons such as old age, overuse syndrome, inflammation, leg length discrepancy, etc. etc., but these are not causes – only symptoms of an underlying cause.
What we have, folks, is a bunch of professionals frantically running around in circles, using a multitude of gadgets, orthotics, pills and scalpels, treating (managing) your myriad of pain symptoms.
In other words, without knowing the cause of your chronic muscle and joint pain, it’s practically impossible for anyone (no matter what their credentials) to eliminate it.
