Why A Consultation With Dr. Rothbart Is Different Than With Other Doctors
An amusing and–to most people–amazing exercise has been circulating the internet. Try it yourself and see if it doesn’t make you wonder!
1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles with it.
2. Now, while ding this, draw the number “6” in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction!
What is this phenomenon and does everyone experience it? The answer is what I call the Foot to Brain Connection.
What is the Foot to Brain Connection?
The foot to brain connection is a process in which the feet actually send messages to the brain, and then the brain responds by making specific adjustments in the body.
One of these processes start in the plantar surfaces of the feet, which are embedded with millions of fast acting touch receptors (Meissner corpuscles). As you stand or walk, these touch receptors in the feet are stimulated in certain patterns. They are called ‘patterns of stimulation’.
These patterns of stimulation (which are formed in the feet) send signals to the cerebellum (the balance center of the brain). The brain automatically responds to these signals by adjusting the body’s posture according to the input it receives from the feet.
The specific messages that are sent from the feet to the brain are what determine whether you have good or bad posture.
Since posture plays an integral role in maintaining healthy joints, optimally functioning muscles and general wellbeing in your entire body, it can be seen that having and maintaining good posture is of great importance.
To learn about foot structures that cause bad posture, read: How The Foot Can Create Muscle and Joint Pain In The Entire Body.
