An excellent article written by Dr. Mercola, Prescription Painkillers Lack Evidence Of Safety and Effectiveness For Long Term Use , well describes the horrendous epidemic of prescription drug abuse and lethal overdose.
Here’s a few statistics taken from the article:
2010 data states that there were enough narcotic painkillers being prescribed in the US to medicate every single adult, around the clock, for a month. As of 2012, 259 million prescriptions for opioids and other narcotic painkillers were written.
This equates to 82.5 prescriptions for every 100 Americans, and those narcotics are responsible for 46 deaths per day. The excessive use of over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers like acetaminophen is equally troublesome, accounting for about 100,000 emergency room visits each year due to overdosing.
Overall, poisoning deaths from all prescription drugs increased by six percent between 2012 and 2013. Deaths from opioids increased by one percent. Heroin deaths surged by 39 percent, and deaths from cocaine increased by 12 percent.
Enough with the statistics, you get the idea. The question is; what do we do about it?
Dr. Mercola advises non-drug alternatives for pain relief. Some examples would be:
- Eliminating or radically reducing your intake of processed foods
- Evening Primrose, Black Currant and Borage Oils
- Cayenne Cream
- Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO) (an oil found in fish and dairy butter)
- Taking a high-quality omega-3 fat
- Optimizing your vitamin D level
- Astaxanthin (a fat soluble antioxidant)
- Emotional Freedom Technique
- Mind-body techniques
- Grounding (walking barefoot on the earth)
- Medical Cannabis
- K-Laser Class 4 Laser Therapy
- Avoid sitting down
- Physical therapy and massage therapy
The above list is the most comprehensive I have seen to help lessen chronic muscle and joint pain in a natural, non invasive way. But, in my experience of well over 40 years in clinical practice, specializing in chronic pain elimination, and having seen thousands of patients who suffer with chronic pain, I’ve found that many of these sufferers had tried at least some and often many of the above suggestions. And each of these people had had some measure of success, but not enough to have kept them comfortable long term and certainly not enough to completely and permanently eliminate their chronic muscle and joint pain.
Pain Relief – Looking Beyond Prescription Drugs And Alternative Treatments
It’s so obvious that the medical community needs to seriously look for other options than prescription pain relievers. But is the long term answer found in the above non-invasive suggestions given by Dr. Mercola?
I have found that the only long term answer lies in finding the cause of the pain and then effectively treating that cause. Most people who suffer with chronic pain that does not respond well, nor long term, to the above natural suggestions are suffering because these natural treatments do not address nor treat the cause. They are only treating symptoms – your pain.
You may be thinking – ‘Well, that’s great! All I want is pain relief!’ But the problem is that when you only treat your pain and not what’s causing it, you may get some relief, but the pain comes back, especially if you stop the treatment.
A common cause of most people’s chronic muscle and joint pain is having an abnormal foot structure – either the Rothbarts Foot or PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity.
If you have a Rothbarts Foot, simply following Dr. Mercola’s suggestions will give you enough pain relief that you can get through the day in some level of comfort. But if you have a PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity none of the above suggestions will help for any real length of time.
