Profile Of A Typical Candidate For Therapy
So you’re thinking; what in the world is Professor Rothbart talking about?! I’ll explain.
In this context, ‘function’ means how well you are doing – how well your body is functioning, and ‘form’ means the skeletal framework of your body.
So, what I’m saying is: How good (or bad) you feel is largely determined by how good (or bad) your posture is.
This concept of ‘function follows form’ was first ascribed to Julius Wolff, a German anatomist. Over one hundred years ago, as he was working with bone, Wolf observed how a bone functions in relation to its’ structure. He found that the stronger the bone, the better it functioned.
His paradigm – function follows form – now known as Wolff´s law, has been expanded and now forms the basis of proprioceptive therapy: That is; the well being of an individual (function) is in large part determined by their posture (form).
The correlation between bad posture and the development of chronic muscle and joint pain is intuitive. Similar to an engineering principle that an unstable building can result in structural, electrical and plumbing problems anywhere in the building, postural distortions can result in chronic pain anywhere in your body.
In over 45 years of clinical experience and research, I’ve repeatedly observed this correlation that postural distortions often result in chronic muscle and joint pain, and that when I improve or correct the distorted posture; most (if not all) chronic pain symptoms are eliminated.
This observation now forms the basis of a therapy I developed, called Rothbart Proprioceptive Therapy.
Frequently I’m asked how poor posture can have such a devastating impact on the well being of the entire body. The answer is in the title of this newsletter: Function (how well your body functions) follows Form (your posture).
In other words; the better your posture, the better you’ll feel.
