Throughout my patient and research websites you will find me continually using the terms proprioception, proprioceptive stimulation, proprioceptive insoles and proprioceptive therapy. You may be wondering – What exactly do these terms mean?
Let’s start with a definition: Proprio comes from the latin word proprius, meaning “one’s own” and perception is the sense of the relative position of neighboring parts of the body.
Proprioception has been described as the body’s two way avenue of communication. Proprioception determines whether the body is moving, and where the various parts of the body are located in relation to each other. That is, the body’s posture.
Proprioceptive stimulation is the process of sending information from your feet to your brain. This process starts when a tactile stimulation is applied to the bottom of your feet. Through this stimulation, a message is sent from your feet to your cerebellum, which is the balance center of your brain.
Your brain then sends commands to your muscles, such as ‘move here’ or ‘don’t move’.
Your muscles then send information back to your brain on their state of elasticity. That is, are they stretched or are they contracted?
Now let’s look at Proprioceptive Insoles.
Proprioceptive insoles change the body’s global posture by sending specific signals from your feet to your brain. Your brain acts on these signals and automatically makes a global correction in your body’s posture.
